Boomers Bar & Grill (Coquitlam)

Was in West Vancouver on a Saturday afternoon in October for some errands and had lunch at Ki-Isu Japanese Restaurant. I then wrapped things up early in West Van and headed to Coquitlam to catch a BC Major Midget Hockey League game between the Vancouver NE Chiefs and Kootenay Ice at the Planet Ice rink.

After that game, I spoke with a couple of Chiefs players for interviews:

I then decided to stay at Planet Ice and grab a bite at Boomers Bar & Grill upstairs. Now, if you’re not in the area or at the rink, you’re not going to be checking out Boomers. Let’s just say that Boomers is on the second level of Planet Ice, which is located in an industrial area on Rocket Way in Coquitlam. People just don’t head to Boomers unless they’re there playing in a men’s hockey league or perhaps they’re parents watching their kids play hockey or ice skate. As you can see in the above photo, Boomers overlooks the hockey rinks below, Rinks # 3 and 4, in fact.

Nonetheless, on this particular Saturday it was a big day for sports because of the Cardinals-Giants playoff game (Game One of the NL Championship Series) and the Canucks-Oilers tilt in Vancouver’s home opener. I sat down to catch the shootout between the Flyers and Canadiens (won by Montreal).

The server was very friendly and told me the wrap of the day was Spicy Cajun Chicken Wrap for C$8.99. It came with either fries or a salad. I ordered that wrap with salad, as well as a Pepsi.

Both the wrap and the salad were very good. The portions were great (in my opinion, keeping in mind I’m a light eater) making it good value for money.

Soon enough, the Canucks-Oilers game started and the player introductions were shown on the flatscreens. The Oilers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and the guys at the table to my left were booing. I simply chuckled and finished my wrap and drink. (Alas, the Oilers went on to blow the lead and lose 5-4.)

The service was great, and they were fast and friendly. Again, not a place you would check out unless you had hockey or skating business there, so you can probably call it one of the hidden gems in Coquitlam.
